Hi Everyone,

I am new to this chat board and extremely happy to have found this group. This is my first year applying to work for the DOD. I have ten years of teaching experience and I am dual certified to teach special education and general education (K-6th). I qualify to teach in about 8 categories and I am willing to move to almost all of the overseas locations.

I have a few questions:

How many of you currently on this board are teaching for the DOD? How long did it take you to get hired?

For those of you who are currently working for the DOE, what was the hiring process like?

I don't have a spouse, but I have a son that I would be taking with me (single mother). There was a section on the application that asked about your spouse, but not dependents.

Thanks,

Amy

I had a few referrals and 2 interviews. I interviewed in December, got my tentative offer about a week later, and was on the ground in Japan in February. It was almost 2 months exa...See More

I'm assuming he would be able to receive those services. I was just hoping that having a child doesn't disqualify me. Other than that, he's healthy! Inte...See More

haha Children are basically a non-factor in hiring. SPED services are offered at every location, but not every level of services is offered at every location. Depending on his situation, it would not likely be a significant problem, but it is one factor to consider about the specific location, should you ever get an offer.

I always let my admin...See More

Ida Both administrators I had to tell in advance thought it was a cool thing to try to do. Particularly since you aren't really saying you are unhappy at your current job just want to try for this "dream" one.

Icanread My administrators knew that I was applying. It's best to keep them in the loop, in my opinion. I phrased it in the same way... a great job opportunity that may or may not happen.
