I was qualified to teach Pre-K-Grade 3, but received the following message after my qualifications were checked regarding 4-6:

"12SH of elementary education course work is required. Courses such as Methods of reading, math, science and language arts in Grade 4-6 is required."

I emailed HR for clarification, but they basically repeated everything already stated. My bachelor's degree covers Pre-kindergarten through 5th grade and my state certifications are Pre-K-6th grade, so I was a little confused why I wasn't qualified for those grade levels. Anyways! I did look into it more and I see that DoDEA does require grades 4-6 teacher to have course work in methods of teaching reading, math, language arts, and science.

So, I will need to take all 4 methods courses before I can become qualified? I'm currently working on obtaining my master's degree, so if anyone has experience taking these courses affordably, I'd love to know more!

haha Correction: You should be able to find some of those subjects combined, but probably not all in one. It's early here, after a long week where they just told us we are also going virtual until after spring break (the last group of DoDEA schools to do so).

Icanread I think you would be able to get hired in early childhood or primary easier than 4-6th grades because there are often more classrooms of primary students than intermediate. Plus, not many people are certified for preK and K in Dodea, as it requires a separate certification and coursework which you obviously have already.

haha On the upside, having the PreK/K is actually more useful/rare than having the 4-6 certification. Many/most ES teachers/candidates seem less likely to have the early childhood classes required for those, then the methods classes required for 4-6.

Also, DoDEA doesn't generally have a 6 grade elementary class/program (and an ES 6 cert would n...See More

teachandtravel Thanks Icanread and haha. I totally understand the process may be a lot slower this year and that's totally fine (so much going on with the schools here as well). That's pretty good to here that PK and K could be useful.

Meme @ teachandtravel - SEU offers those classes in their online Master in Elementary Education program. I'm taking my last method class now. Student loans and the Teach Grant can help you with the cost. It's $1,200 per class

Here are the "core courses" for their program
