I interviewed for a teaching job as a local hire on the 7th. I thought that it went well and I was told by the interviewing principals to notify my references that they would be contacted. It's been 10 days and none of my references have been contacted yet. Is there any hope left at all? They told me that the hiring process had been slow lately, but the school year is starting in about a month and I would assume that they would want to complete the hiring process as quickly as possible at this point? Should I just give up hope or are there any late summer hires on here who still had to wait a few weeks until they received a tentative offer?

Jules12 I didn't know that we could ask HR. I might just do that. I'm in Korea. I think my only downfall was probably my longevity because they can see on my husband's orders (which gives me military spouse preference) that we will be leaving in June of next year :-/

haha You can always ask. There is no guarantee they will give you an answer (or a helpful one) but it's worth asking. Some principals may be bothered by your departure date, some won't. Good luck!
