I would post this in the Teach Abroad chat board, but it seems to be dead. Although I am hoping to land a job with DoDEA in the future, this post is with general teaching abroad in mind. I recently got a job teaching at an international school in Honduras (still looking for an English 12 teacher, if you or anyone you know is interested lol).

I'm thinking ahead to certificate renewal (I'm certified in WV and my license expires in 2024). In my state, we have to take 6 hours of masters level courses or free, state-provided PD courses. They're all a pain in the butt, time-consuming, and honestly, at least right now, I don't have the money to pay for a masters (or the desire to do it). I'm wondering how teachers with DoDEA (or especially teachers who have taught abroad in other, non-DoDEA schools) have gone about renewing their teaching licenses while they're abroad. What options are there that might be worth starting the process toward?

Cordelia You might want to look more into WV, as after you have the five year license you can apply for permanent certification in WV. For my state, I am required to take 6 credits. I have also done some online courses with various universities. If you're doing it for credit, but not matriculating, it's not a lot of money ($300 to $500 range for a 3 credit ...See More

Upon expiration of the second 5-year certificate, I can apply for permanent licensure. This is definitely an option. I suppose since it's 8 years and 6 masters-level hours down the road, I ...See More

Icanread I am from Arizona. I had to pay for 12 credit hours, I believe. I keep mine current and active, just in case I need to go back to the states.

HelpOthers As haha mentioned. DoDEA requires 6 semester hours anyway (every 6 years). You can also increase your pay with MA+15, MA+30, or go ahead and get your PhD (Ed.S. is a pay column stateside).

HelpOthers Many people use Liberty University for a degree. University of San Diego is the one that DoDEA often uses for providing graduate credit to the classes offered for professional development. Just make sure whatever you do provides college credit and not just continuing education hours.
