I'll be starting my ninth year as a teacher, and one thing I've come to realize is that I need to loosen up some in the classroom. I've always been more reserved, both in and out of the classroom, and while I can't/won't change who I am at my core, I know that loosening up some will help me to connect better with my new students (inner city grade 6).

One way I've thought of doing this is by wearing fun/silly socks each day instead of my usual black ones. A SPED teacher at one of my old schools did it and it became a thing among both staff and students to see what crazy or silly socks he was wearing that day.

I know it's not going to make a huge impact, but it feels like it could be a good first step towards showing a lighter side to me and show my students that I'm a human with interests and personality too.

Thoughts?
haha Tough to foresee what different groups of students will get a kick out of. I'm fairly laid back and open and find that humor and a genuine interest and affection for my students goes along way (I am a SPED teacher). I have also started taking more of an interest in some of my students interests which has also paid off (anime, specific games, etc.).

MsU Don't be afraid to be yourself, especially the goofy side. Kids respond go authenticity and vulnerability as well as confidence and authority. Do the socks. See which kids notice first. I have a fairy that sneaks out of her terrarium fairly regularly and gets in capers around the room. The kids love it. Maybe you can have fun with your environment ...See More
