If you can scroll down quite a ways and look for messages I've posted, I submitted a detailed one a couple of weeks ago about preparing for Component 1. Maybe that would be helpful.
Otherwise, come back and tell your certificate area for more help. Good Luck!

I am preparing to take the Content Knowledge Exam (Component 1). I am working toward Early Childhood through Young Adulthood / Exceptional Needs Specialist. Is there any advice that anyone can give? Anyone with samples items or things they recommend I study? Thanks in advance for any help.

What WorksThey are in the Component 1 document found on the NB website.

I need some advice on the assessment portion of the National Boards process. Especially the legal and ethical section. It is really hard to find help in Library Media in my area.
I am currently going through National Board and just completed Component 1 and 2. I'm also always looking for others in library media. What are your specific questions?
Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions would be muc...See MoreMy son is a teacher, specifically teaching gifted middle school students. I'm proud because teachers can make a difference. My career only created more wealth for people who already had too much.
He asked me if I could help find study material or practice exams for the subject above.
Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated by both.
You are a super nice guy to do this! If you'll scroll down a few messages from where yours is posted, you'll see an extensive message I wrote a few days ago regarding studying for Component 1. While I wrote the post for ALL NB candidates, your son should be able to use the information to find specifics he needs.
Best Wishes!

Anyone have any tips for comp 1 test? Is this like the CSET content knowledge exam in California? This process makes you feel like your driving blind!!

Can anyone tell me where to go for sample test questions. I have printed out all I can find online from earlier versions, and done Khan Academy...but know I'm not there yet. The directions seem so very vague! Thanks in advance.
The Selected Response section gives you examples of the kinds of questions that might be on the test AND the correct answers. I would study those problems and note the TOPCIS/TYPES OF PROBLEMS they represent...then look in math texts at all the grade levels covered in your certificate and find similar problems. These might not be the ONLY topics covered in the SR items...as I think there are 45 items in this part. This part will also have SOME pedagogical questions regarding HOW to teach a concept
There is a chart on page 1 that outlines the AREAS of math included in the assessment, so concentrate on those concepts. This is also a good time to go back and re-read some of your NB Standards.
Then there are 3 Constructed Response exercises covering: Algebra and Functions, Geometry, and Data Analysis and Statistics. I'd say to spend some time reviewing these skills. Use the sample exercises as your guide.
Pay attention to the RUBRICS. Pay attention to the VERBS used in the directions as they tell you exactly what you must do, such as GRAPH, IDENTIFY etc.
Math candidates receive a Response Booklet to use to record your answers.
I suggest practicing each of the Sample CR exercises multiple times so you'll get faster each time. Set a timer for 30 minutes and go at it...30 minutes PER exercise.
Look in math texts etc. to study the topics in the various grade levels represented in your certificate area and bone-up on any you feel weak in. GOOGLE topics as well for resources. BE RESOURCEFUL!
That's the best advice I can give. Historically, math candidates have some of the highest Assessment Center scores...hope that will hold true for you.
Good Luck!

I am beginning the process for renewal. I am concerned about the 4 PGE's. Can anyone guide me in the direction for brainstorming? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
For 2 of my 3 constructed response questions, I am going to need to identify 2 strengths or aspects and then proceed with the analysis for each strength/aspect. I'm trying to decide if it is better to fully address one and then fully address the other, or if it is best to address both simultaneously. If I run out of time, is it better to be incomplete equally for both, or to have fully addressed one and not the other.
I'm glad you are looking at and analyzing the exercises.
I'm not a trained assessor and can't really give an opinion as to what would be better. Of course, completing it all, would be optimum, but I know many don't and they still do at least ok, score-wise.
My best advice would be to have several ideas in mind when you start that relate to those prompts. Use the white board they give you when you arrive to jot some notes you can refer to as you write. Write as fast as you can...maybe using bullets if that style suits you so you can say more in less time, but write in whatever style you can think best in and write fastest. For some, that's bullets, for some it's sentences.
Do practice responding to the sample exercises multiple times...you'll train yourself to think and write faster each time. Although your exercises won't be the same as the samples, they will be similar.
Also, spend some time with the Rubrics...of course you want to hit the Level 4 Rubric, but read the others too. They will give you good insight into how the levels vary.
Sorry I can't be more specific...I just don't know!
Good Luck to you!
