I am struggling to understand exactly what I can use as the formative assessment and how the self-assessment fits in. I want to use a formative assessment that I give daily in the same exact format for the same type of problems (self-assessment after a number talk). As the unit progresses, the problems change to match. At the end of the 10 minute number talk students self assess: 2 stars, 1 star, question mark and I collect the data through plickers. So I have a spreadsheet of each class, each student, each day and their response for the whole unit. I address the question marks on the spot that day and monitor the 1 stars to see if they move to 2. I have 3 questions:

1) Can I use this as the formative assessment even though it is many wrapped up in the same one?

2) The self-assessments say they must include an opportunity for students to decide on next steps. This doesn't have that, so is this not going to work?
