I teach 8th grade mathematics and I have identified slope as an area in which students did not perform well during the previous to school years. The unit test performance averaged lower than normal and it was identified as an area of weakness in our standardized testing. I attended professional development and met with colleagues to plan a better unit with a variety of activities and some of the strategies I learned during my professional development. I implemented those changes this year. My question is, how can I prove this new unit we planned benefited my students? I can compare unit test scores and standardized test scores before and after I implemented the new strategies, but it would be comparing two different groups of students. Is this okay? I mean the scores did go up, but maybe this group is smarter. Is this really evidence?
