MC/Gen Comp 4

I am wondering what the best choice should be. My assessment portion on Comp. 4 will be on adding and subtracting fractions( with regrouping). I am wondering if I should stick to the standard that states students should be able to add and subtract with unlike den. using standard algorithm, or should I use the next standard, solve real life problems using adding and subtracting of fractions. Both will show they can add and subtract (by finding LCD and regrouping), but the latter is a bit more time consuming and less black and white.

Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
