I wanted to get some opinions on this matter. . . At our elem. school the students have to get a certain amount of AR points. Depending on how many they get determines a daily grade they receive at the end of the six weeks. That's fine with me! What is bothering me a bit is that if they score below an 80 then they don't get to count those points towards the number the need. I can see if a child fails the book, then maybe not getting any credit for it is warranted. For example, my son read a 15 chapter book. It was a 4.4 level and he's in the 4th grade. He scored a 70 on it and earned 2.8 points, but those will not be counted toward the 8 total points he needs this grading period. In my opinion that is discouraging him to read longer chapter books. He might as well read an easy 1 or .5 book that he is probably going to be able to get an 80 on so that he can get his points. Any thoughts on this out there. . . .
Karenb As I understand the AR program the goals are dual - to encourage reading at each child's individual level, and promote comprehension through testing. Our school requires that the children maintain an 85% comprehension score through the nine weeks in addition to achieving the point total. This increases to 90% in grade 4.
