Hi everyone. This is my first year teacher middle school on my own. I will be doing 6th separately and 7- 8 mixed. I was wondering what a good first project or first day work activity would be good to do. I want it also to be a way to get to know the students. I'm sweating bullets. Also, what should I look out for on the first day.
SweetartI agree with doing portfolio covers I've been teaching middle school for 10 years but the way I do portfolio covers is a little bit different. The way I do it is depending on the size of your portfolio you give them all the same size circle to trace on to the paper the circle should be pretty large but fit within the paper but be the main thing on the paper. For my students I have them trace the top of their stool because the paper we use is very large but you can use any size paper based on the size portfolio you would like to do. What's really great about this project is that you can see the kids artistic ability and their creativity and usually it shows a little bit about what they like based on what they choose to do with the circle they also must include their name in the design. the cool thing is they can do anything they want with a circle they can make it a doughnut, a rollercoaster, a hot air balloon, a pumpkin, a pocket watch anything they want to do and it's so cool to see all the different ideas come through and to see how their artistic ability is different and just to see so many variations all using the exact same circle and the exact same size paper and they're all so different and it's a really really cool project they absolutely love it I have had a 100% success rate I have never had a kid not into it they really love it because they have so much freedom to make whatever they want within the confines of using that circle so I think that is a really awesome 1st day project and really it takes them at least a week to finish it because they put a lot of effort into it you can use color pencils markers whenever you like to do to colored in but they really really love it and they take their time and they make it look nice and it's such a great project so I would highly highly recommend it I also have them sketch out 3 different ideas first that way they have options if it turns out two people want to do the same thing, but that rarely happens.
It's about a first year art teacher who is Asian-American who teaches at an all black high school. She faces extreme challenges in a racist hostile environment. Check out my webpage for more information:

Hi, I am embarking upon a project which is aimed at raising engagement and attainment for boys that are underachieving. I am looking at strategies and processes that can be implemented within my art dept to trial. This is for KS4- aimed at closing the gap between males and females. Would much appreciate any ideas. Many thanks
Hello, I am first year art teacher starting in September in NYC. I need help writing a curriculum for Jr. High. I do not have an MA in art ed but a MFA. This is my first teaching job and I want to be prepared. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Does anyone have any great ideas for substituting resources in visual arts lessons? Most visual arts lessons require a lot of resources. I used to buy a lot of resources for my visual arts lessons but then one of my work collegues suggested to substitute resources. It is easy to substitute resources which are more readily available in schools. For example, instead of using coloured papers, students can colour the white paper with crayons and oil pastels. Instead of buying hats or eye patches, teachers can provide photocopied templates to students. For one of my visual arts lessons, students had to create a rain scene. This activity was based on one of the books that we had read that term. I used plain white paper which students coloured and used the classroom tissues instead of buying cotton balls.
If you do have any ideas for substituting art resources, which are available at homes or in schools, then please do share your ideas. Thanks
