We have an extremely bright daughter whom we held back a
year before entering kindergarten. Summer birthday, very
small in size. We did this because socially, she was not
ready. She did not want to go to kindergarten until
Christmas time. Her preschool teachers (had the same
teachers for 2 years in a row) did not feel she was ready
for kindergarten either. Her biggest "handicap" is that
she would not talk. She wouldn't answer a question when
asked, wouldn't say hi when spoken to, etc. At home, she
is the "normal" child.

Her K teacher just told me that something needs to
change. She says socially she does talk. I teach in the
same school as my children go and question this comment by
what I am observing and what my daughter tells me. She
still won't talk to the special teachers, plays by herself
a lot at recess and free time, went w/o a favorite food at
lunch because she didn't want to ask whe...See More

I believe that you little girl is very bright. Is she shy or
does she have any anxioties? (sp) If she only us comfoterble
talking at home she may have Select Mutism. Talk to your
doctor or theripst. It may also just be a phase.
