Hi all, I hope everyone has had a good week! Tomorrow night is our weekly chat! We'll be talking about types of curriculum that we use: Creative Curriculum; curriculum based on monthly goals, etc. Come share your thoughts on curriculum!

Next week we are planning on specifically discussing and learning Montessori curriculum!

Creative Curriculum is more of a philosophy/approach. It is not a "boxed" or set curriculum. What we all seem to like about it is that there are planning points or objectives. I believe the 4th edition was 58 objectives? The newer one coming out covers 38 objectives.

By knowing what the objectives are that you want to focus on with the children, you have a better base for planning. In order to know what objectives to plan for, you need to know where your children are at in each area of development. This is what the objectives in CC are focused on.

The curriculum also covers how to cover those objectives in each of the learning centers (math, sand/water, etc.).

There are some of us who write our own curriculum based on themes. Again, knowing where your children are is imperative in order to help them grow and develop in each area. It's great to have activities to help our children understand one- to-one correspondence up to, let's say 5, for example. However, if your students are already proficient up to 5, they will be bored with these activities. That is the importance of knowing where they are at!

In our three year old program, one of our objectives is color and shape recognition. Activities were planned for the first month of school for this. After the first week with the children, the teacher found that ALL of the children could identify colors and most shapes. The teachers could then step it up to mixing primary colors to make colors.

Assessing as you go will help to provide a better learning experience for the children.

Montessori is an approach and philosophy that has been around for a long time. As many in the chat stated last night, most colleges don't even mention it in courses!

I love these chats! I have learned so much over the past month at these chats. Some things I've learned? Well, to name a few: Ideas to help special needs children, organizational ideas, teaching approaches, what the climate in Hawaii is like, ideas for interacting with parents, and what the best type of brush is to use on my cute little Corgi dog during shedding season!

montmo Sorry I missed the chat last night. I felt like I was skipping class. lol

Am looking forward to next week's chat...I don't know if I can explain it in just one evening. Maybe the questions will give me more directon in what to cover. Or maybe someone else with a Montessori background will join us? montmo
