I was thinking of ordering thru Amazon, but haven't a clue as to what to get. I don't want to use CDs for backup.

Neal LaCie, HP, WesternDigital any of those are OK.

Do you have Firewire 400/800 or just USB2?

Size wise get the largest you can afford so that you can keep duplicates of downloaded apps, and projects that can take up lots of space. 500GB will be SMALL for the future.

Ummmm, I don't know what Firewire is! I know what a USB port is. If it helps, I'm on a modem using a high speed internet.

Neal Since you offered no information about the model of your Mac, I had to ask, some have none, some have one or the other, some have both.

Mac OS is not really set up to use USB2 for certain tasks, though newer models are more USB2 Friendly.

There's no point in buying a backup drive that uses a communications protocol that your Mac...See More

David Gammill I like the LaCie rugged drives, because they can be bumped without loosing data. I have had external drives merely tip over and die! The rugged drives cost more, but I think the extra protection is well worth it!
