I received a BA in psychology in '91 and am license eligible for social work. Fast forward several years, I currently plan on studying for my social work license. My professional background has been in healthcare business but have been out of the workforce as a stay at home mom since 2003. During that time and currently, I volunteer a lot at my children's elementary school in Ohio - tutoring through the guidance counseling intervention program, classroom parent representative and organizing several school functions. I would like to seek out a part-time career in the guidance department of a school, even assisting the guidance counselor. I am looking into pursuing an online graduate certificate to supplement my education and experience. My options are: Behavioral Science through Aderson University, Professional Counseling through Capella University or Child/Adolescent Psychology through Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Jarod HM Before you decide what program to choose, you need to check the certification rules in your state if you want to work. If you want to work in a public school, even part-time, you will need to have the certification and you don't want to finish a program and realize that you need to different coursework.

Jarod HM American School Counselor Association (ASCA) has a list of the public school certification requirements for each state and links to the website. Read the information for your state and double check to see if the rules have not change or in the process of the changing.
