Writing Across The Curriculum

As a special education teacher, I try to get my students to write about anything that interest them. Since my students spelling is usually poor, I give them several options in writing their stories. They can have a parent or another student translate it for them, they can type it on the computer and use the spell checker, or sometimes I will work with them one on one and they will dictate their story verbally to me as I write it or type it for them (this works well with my more challenged students.) I find that several of my students like to write about Science topics or places they have visited. Another of their interest lies in stories of their imagination. I think that reading and writing opens up the world of education for a child.
