Here's a question....

In my district, the department head (only available to MS and HS teachers) comes with a healthy stipend. But in elementary, we have grade level lead teachers who have extra assignments but there is NO stipend. What exactly do Department Heads do that is different from lead teachers in elementary?

Rin Our District does have a stipend for grade level chairpersons. Although it doesn't at all measure up with the amount of extra work performed by a grade chair.

jme No extra money or planning time for department heads in our school (high school). What and how much extra they do depends on a couple of things: 1. The size of the department; and 2. Whether and to what degree the subject is tested.

When I worked at a middle school in which we had grade-level teams. it was the same.

meep I have been the grade level chair (called lead teacher in some schools) and some years I have been paid a stipend and other years I have not been paid. It all depended on the principal's decision about where to spend money.
