I am a Kindergarten teacher, and I am quite active on the K chatboard. I also post on the NBPTS chatboard. I need some information from some English experts! I read this book within the last 5 years - I guess I never was required to read it as a student. I have 3 teens, and it's nice to read what they read. I recently went to see this book as a play. The set was very good, but I wasn't excited about the show since they didn't attempt to have fire within the production. My question is about the character named Black. I know he is a minor character, so I am having trouble remembering details about him. Was he African American in the book? Was he called "Blackie" within the text? YOu help is greatly appreciated.
Novel Like you, I read the book a long time ago, but have taken several trips to theatre shows and not seen an Afro-Caribbean person play Black. I have no recollection of the nickname at all. Sorry, not a lot of good. Why did you ask

Charliethecow I went with my daughter to a high school production of the show. The boy playing the lead (Guy Montag) wrote a comment something like "Thanks to ___ for playing Blackie. It's great that you always play the Black guy!" OMG! I was shocked. I was also glad this wasn't my daughter's school. Thanks!

calif english teacher Black and Stoneman were two fellow firemen. They're around to play poker in the firehouse and to ride on the firetruck to Beatty's house. Black is driving. He is surprised when Beatty quotes something from a book, but I don't remember what it was. No references to race. And didn't Montag leave a book in Black's house as he was fleeing the city?

Andrew Kaufman While he quotes many books, the one I remember is Shakespeare's Julius Ceasar: "There is no terror, Cassius, in your threats,

For I am arm'd so strong in honesty,

That they pass by me as the idle wind

Which I respect not. (IV.iii.71-76)"

Yes, Montag left a book in black's house as he was fleeing.
