Test retake--what's your opinion?

I gave an open note test to my 7th grade reading class. These notes were on the ActivBoard from which the student was to copy. I did various activities throughout the course of the notes to check for understanding before deciding to test them.

I was greatly surprised to find out several students failed the open note test, which was true/false, matching, multiple choice, and labeling of the plot diagram.

There were no tricky questions (unless you consider true/false tricky) and all of it was straight forward almost word for word from the notes.

What is your take on giving a second chance on an open note test?

Just curious.

Sometimes kids can seem to grasp something during activities but then in a pen and paper test, they really don't have a grasp. Are the kids who failed strong readers or weak readers?

What would not giving them a make up accomplish? Some teachers would believe that these kids just didn't try on the test and then teachers give them their failing grade to 'teach them a lesson'. That doesn't always work but each school and its students are different.

If these kids were weak students, I wouldn't be surprised that they did poorly on any test even if prior to the test they seemed to know the material. If these students were strong students, then I'd really be puzzled and would really want to find out why they did poorly on the test.

I'm not of the 'let's move on' school of thought when it comes to kids failing any test. marjoryt I had a similar experience with my college freshmen this past week, on a discussion question test. They were upset to GET a discussion question - thinking that I'm supposed to only give objective questions.
