Instead of creating a long multiple-choice-and-short-essay semester final -- well four of them, actually, for three preps and a co-op class -- what if I told students it's THEIR job to show me what they've learned this semester? I mean something like a portfolio, a reflection essay, a project or conference or display that they can set before me and explain how it demonstrates that they HAVE paid attention, they HAVE been productive, they HAVE grown intellectually over the past four and a half months.

Would their heads explode?

More importantly, do I really need to create criteria and a rubric, or do I toss those tasks their way, too? (The only criteria I was considering is that they cover literature, writing, and vocabulary somehow.)

Sam J Here are my thoughts for what it is worth...

1) Like marjory, I feel that I would be doing my students a disservice if I did not require final exams. I have a nice mix of styles of questions and essays.

2) I really like your ideas, but in your second posting I though the ideas were too loosy, goosy. For instance, if you have stude...See More

retired If I were a student in your class, I would hate you forever if you assigned such a thing to me. You are the teacher/evaluator in this arrangement- you are supposed to keep up with my progress. If it's open to interpretation at all, I will do the least amount possible that I believe will net me a passing grade. Reflection? I hate the term- it's just...See More
