Hello. I will have my teaching certification (Spanish) by May. I expect to have work in August (at a specific school). I am interested in getting my ESL certification. My question is, if I will already be working as an educator, how would I accumulate ESL clinical hours?

I live in Illinois.
Vanessa How about a part time job teaching ESL to adults. These jobs are usually during evening hours or weekends. They usually ask you to work 2 to 4 hours per week. If you can't find a part time job try calling local community service organizations that might offer ESL classes for adults. They might let you teach ESL for a few hours as a volunteer.

Chris Cashman Wait -- Do you think that I would be allowed to use hours with ADULTS at a community college to count for an ESL certification at the K-12 level?? Gosh, I already did that for a year and a half! In that case, I would already have the hours. But... do the hours have to be done with a K-12 population?

NYteacher I doubt that adult hours would count. There are likely two options available to you -

1) get your hours during summer school next year 2) if you have ESL in your school, get hours done during your planning periods.

CeliaB I live and teach in Illinois and I was able to get my hours in WHILE I was teaching in the classroom. I was able to do this because I had students in my class who were English Language Learners.
