I am an ESL teacher who works for a non - profit organization. I have been working there for seven years.

I have a question about pay - I am part - time and get paid per diem. My hourly wage is standard. (about $22/hr but I only work 25 hrs a week or so) I don't get paid for personal or sick days, holidays, or vacation time. I get paid for a half hour prep time each day.

Just curious - is this typical of non - profit organizations and/or ESL jobs? I don't want to sound like a prima donna, but I've been struggling since this is my only job.

Thanks in advance,

Eliza

I also teach ESL part-time for about 25 hours/week, but I work in public schools, not a non-profit organization. Our full-time ESL teachers are paid on the state salary scale like all other teachers. As a certified ESL teacher with a MA, I earn $25/hour. I ...See More

L Hi Eliza, I'm in the same boat as you...I've really been having a hard time with finding a full-time ESL teaching job. I've been teaching for a few years, and I got my M.A. in TESOL about 2 years ago. I've been working part-time at a community college for about 25/hr, with no benefits. It's definitely not enough to live on. For some reason, it seem...See More

Mrs. Terrazas I agree ladies. When I became and ESL teacher I did not think that it was a support type position. I would recommend talking to districts that encourages bilingual education. These campuses will have a higher number of ESL students because of the fact that after many years of education in their native language of Spanish, they have not gained enoug...See More
