There were no injuries. Victoria Fire Department responded to multiple 911 calls about thick black smoke pouring out of the restaurant at 1425 Store St. at 3:09 a.m. Firefighters smashed their way through the door and had the blaze in the kitchen and bar area under control at about 4 a.m. Deputy Fire Chief Chris Royle said from the scene today that fire crews did an extraordinary job in stamping out the blaze quickly and saving the building. “It was a quick knockdown by fire crews,” Royle said. “They did a great job.” The large horseshoe-shaped Mexican restaurant is on the ground floor of the two-storey, brick-and-beam Market Square. The historic building, which opens up onto Johnson and Store streets and Pandora Avenue, houses several unique boutiques, businesses, restaurants and features an open courtyard. The fire licked up the walls from the restaurant into the second floor of the market, causing fire, water and smoke damage to the space used by Pacific Rim College. The market’s roof was also damaged. The fire spread through a void space around a ventilation duct to the floor above and the roof of the building, setting off a sprinkler on the second floor, according to a an incident report released by Battalion Chief Lance Mitchell. The restaurant wraps around a door leading down into a basement space, last operated by The Social Club nightclub but is now under renovation. Fire inspectors are investigating if any damage was caused to that space. The fire did not reach the restaurant’s ground-floor neighbours, Paboom showroom and Famosa Neopolitan Pizzeria. However the Victoria Fire Department says those businesses have smoke damage. Cafe Mexico was insured. All of the spaces possibly affected by fire or smoke were ventilated, according to the Victoria Fire Department. Power and natural gas were shut off to the affected sections of the market. About 20 firefighters responded to the blaze. An additional crew was called in to provide coverage for the rest of the city. The fire department used four engine trucks, a ladder truck, rescue truck and a command truck. The cause of the fire and the amount of damage due to the fire, water and smoke damage to the restaurant is still under investigation. Market Square administration suggests customers avoid the market’s Store Street entrance. All stores plan to open at their regular times today.
