So I am a first grade teacher of a great group of students! I do have some very major behaviors that I'm working on. However, I also have some very sweet kids who seem unhappy. I overheard a table group making some unkind comments about me (specifically wishing they had a sub). This is something I haven't experienced before. This hurt - but I am the adult so I will get over it. I look at all the blogs of wonderful first grade teachers who are amazing -- they look like amazing teachers, have amazing products (many of which I have and use) and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't hear a comment from one of their students' mouths like the one I heard.

I've been teaching for many years - this is the first year that I've had this many passive/aggressive students -- ones who won't talk to me, or say no, or blow up. But many who are sweet too (even the ones that I mentioned can be sweet). I try to plan fun activities but I do hit academics very hard (but in a fun way). I wouldn't say I"m mean ...See More

1st Thanks to everyone's advice! I took some time this weekend to reflect on it. I may be over-reacting and maybe it is normal for kids to act like this (as some have mentioned) but I want to figure out how to teach so it rarely happens.

Sara - you gave me a lot of thoughts to reflect on and I thank you. I truly could talk about this for month...See More

Sara It's strange -- I hate conflict but > with kids I always feel like I must be in control or I am > failing (and ironically that puts me with conflict within > myself).

And it puts you in conflict with the kids and possibly their parents as well. You say your motivation in the classroom is to keep control - if you are in control you...See More
