I have heard that sleeping burns more calories than watching TV. Is there truth to this? How do they measure this? The only evidence I have is that Summer is the only time I can actually lose weight.
If you sleep instead of watch TV you will not be nibbling on snacks and you will be giving your body the rest it so needs. Studies have shown that those who get enough sleep DON'T crave foods that are high in carbs. A tired body crave the carbs to keep it moving but these carbs put on the weight. If you are getting enough sleep, you will wake up easily and be ready to go. If you are not getting enough sleep you will need an alarm clock or two and keep hitting the snooze button before getting up reluctantly. Get to bed early enough so you can get the 8 hours in. If you find that you wake consistently before the 8 hours then you can stay up a bit later...experiment to find what you need. Just because you are able to get by with less sleep doesn't mean you are getting what your body needs. Sleep enough and you will eat less. When your body is tired you will find yourself eating more. The more you eat the more you weigh. Sleep is very important in many ways.

Then, as the break time approaches, intentionally start drinking water again. A little experimenting will help you learn how much you can drink--and how soon.

Seems like no matter how many times I santize my classroom, use santizer and wash my hands I am still catching colds from my students during the winter months. I don't know what else to do. I think teachers should get hazard pay.
My second thought was to disagree with several of the other posters...See MoreMy first question is how long have you been teaching? I've noticed that most teachers get sick a lot during their first 2-5 years of teaching. After that, they tend to get sick only very rarely. (I usually joke that someone ought to do a study on teachers' immune systems!)
My second thought was to disagree with several of the other posters. I strongly disagree with using hand sanitizers or antibacterial wipes often. There were several studies on this when these products first came on the market--the results: the frequent use of these products can lead to more resistant bacteria. I use them only very infrequently.

I've been teaching 15 years in first grade. I too was told you only get sick the first 2-3 years. !!!! LOL I'm sick ALL the time. I feel that part of the problem is the fact that our school is old. It is not cleaned well and the ventilation system is poor as well. I liked the comment about getting the stale, virus filled air out of the room!!!
Walking is good for your brain. A new University of Pittsburgh study shows the more you walk, the more blood your brain gets. Preventing the natural shrinkage and much of the memory loss that comes with age.
Today I did 12,356 steps on my morning walk! My usual goal is a 10,000-step walk, so this is a good day for me. I tried a new trail, which I guess is a little bit longer than my usual one.
I am lucky to live within a mile of a big park with hiking trails, so that is where my dog and I walk.
Some of us used to post a daily exercise roll call on the Main board. I think it was another poster (judy5ca, maybe? Sorry, I forget!) who started it, and I tried to keep it going, but I lost my motivation for keeping up the posting. :(
Though I have kept up my walking, fortunately! :)
Shall we try again? If I don't start the daily Exercise Roll Call post, will someone else? It doesn't matter who posts first for the day.
Oh, and I saw something very interesting today at the park. Have you ever seen wild artichoke? It very spiky and painful-looking!
KathyOoh, I like the roll call idea. I walked twice yesterday. I went a total of 4.5 miles. I am on my way upstairs to get my sweatshirt to go walking this morning. Come on everyone, let's get those shoes tied and get moving. I slept in since I usually get up at 4:45. Today I got myself up at 6:00. It was chilly here. I went downstairs and did 45 minutes using the Leslie Sansone walking DVDs. I like using the segments where she has you use small weights or resistance bands. I will go again after dinner. I have allowed myself to avoid exercise. I have added weight rather than take it off. I cut back on my food intake to supposedly offset the lack of exercise. I have learned that all that did was lower my metabolism. I worked with a nutritionist until she moved to get my calories back up where they belonged, but as you can guess my body has had to adjust to the increase so I put on some pounds. I am going to get back in the exercise habit and I am going to continue to eat healthier. I still eat junk food, but much less than I used to eat. I am with you steps, I need to lose weight and I am going to start this summer and keep it up this school year. I am retiring in 2 years and I want to be healthy enough to enjoy it. Keep on movin! Discovered a new trail today at the park. It isn't a long one, though, so I had to make up more mileage by walking more on the streets.
I'm going to figure out how to do maybe two trails in one walk to make it come out about right.
Have a great exercisin' day today!
I'm going to post this on the Main board, since it seems they're starting a roll call there, too. Maybe it's better to post our roll call over there..?
I don't eat a lot each day and we have our main meal at lunch. Generally we don't eat dinner. I love fruit of most kinds. Is there some kind of diet eating mostly that? Exercise I don't get b/c of a bad back. I'm about 20 lbs. overweight.
On 6/22/11, KD...See Moreon WW almost all fruits and vegetables are 0 points. But you still need to get your protein and fiber. In order to lose weight, you have to use up more calories than you take in. That means you have to work harder to burn those calories - rev up your metabolism- and the older you get the harder it is. WW has a lot of merit.

Started a "diet" on July 1st and already lost 8 pounds. I'm eating fruit (mostly bananas and grapes) and if I really feel that I need something naughty I eat a little 100-calorie bag of cookies or Cheese- its (you can buy them , 6 in a box- small enough to lack calories but big enough to satisfy your craving). For dinner I have a Lean Cuisine. That's it. Fruit, Lean Cuisine and a little 100-calorie bag of cookies. I haven't been able to walk due to the excessive heat here in NY and now today it's raining. If I walk, along with the dieting, I hope to lose more. It IS possible to lose weight once you make up your mind. I finally made up my mind when I saw the picture of Paula Dean on the cover of a magazine. She looked FABULOUS! I said to myself , "if she can do it, I can do it".
