I just went on an interview where the elementary librarian taught 4 60 minute ancillary classes in the library a day. Just like art, music and PE. Is this the norm for elementary librarians? Library as a class that gets a grade. Is there a curriculum for library? I do not remember ever taking library as a class in elementary school.

wolfe I've been teaching library "classes" for 10 years. When teachers began teaching according to the standards I noticed there were many "frills" that teachers no longer had time to teach. PW All of the elementary librarians in my district teach library as an ancillary class in rotation with PE, Technology, and Music. They have the students twice a week for 25 minutes each time. It is not graded numerically as other classes are, but with an "Excellent," "Satisfactory," "Needs Improvement," or "Unsatisfactory" for each grading period. ...See More

before our assessment tests were redone a few years ago, there was a section on library skills. Now, there is usually a couple of library questions within the language arts section.

chell Yes, unfortunately library is being taught as an ancillary class now. This is either due to ignorance on the part of administrators as to the proper role of a librarian, or the blatant ignoring of the proper role of a librarian so that teachers can have a daily plan time.
