Hi,

My prinicipal wants me to plan a unit on Shakespeare for my Third Grade class. I would appreciate any ideas or websites! Thanks in advance for any help.

skylark2628 I'm sorry, but I just don't think there is a Shakespeare play suitable for 3rd graders. In every play, be it a comedy or tragedy or historical, there are nuances, ironies, and word plays that are inappropriate for a child of that age. True, there are "graphic novels" of these dramas, but even these are not really suitable for 3rd graders.

Froggybee My daughter (just finished 2nd grade) has devoured the Usborne version of Shakespeare's plays. It is a compilation book. I have not read it, but she has read it over, and over, and over and over until now we need a new copy! She began in first grade, so the reading level is probably 4/5 grade. Cathy Evert I would also look into the sonnets - 3rd graders can handle the poems and draw pictures as you read them aloud. The sonnets are as deep as you want them to be and you can teach rhyming patterns, etc.

Travlinjen Lois Burdett wrote the "Shakespeare for Kids" series. There is also a book called "Shakespeare for Kids: His Life and Times, 21 Activities". Two Grade 3 classes at my school studied Romeo and Juliet a few years ago, finishing with a full production in June.
