Can anyone help me to help my students prevent careless errors?

I know that I may be asking for magic, but there must some tricks out there. I'm speaking specifically about Pre Alg and Algebra 1.

I have students who understand integers, understand what they need to do, but will still multiply when addition is called for, multiply a neg x neg in one part of the problem correctly and then, in the same problem, do it incorrectly?

Are there any suggestions by experienced teachers?

Michelle I do require that students check there answers. When it comes to algebra, they can always know if they have the correct answer since they can substitute the value they find back into the original equation. When taking a quiz or test, if they have not "checked' their solution, then they do not get any credit for their work. A wrong answer is complet...See More
