i was in a meeting. and the other teachers wanted to make ti84/83 a requirement for alg 1. i stated that i do not believe most schools use the graphing calculators in algebra 1. the other teachers thought i was crazy and that we were the only stone age school w/o using these expensive calculators in alg 1 class? what do you think?

LInsey We have used calculators, provided by the school, in high school math classes since about 1993. We are a small, rural school in Texas.

LeighAnne and this is why students don't pass Algebra 2. Seriously! You have ZERO need for a calculator!!!

Linsey You are probably right, but our state end of course test in Algebra I REQUIRES that each student have a graphing calculator. The questions that are asked on it heavily emphasize the graphs. When the "experts" from the education service centers come in to help the students, it is all about how to use the calculators to get the answers. Not much choi...See More

MFN a math teacher complaining about how calculators are not helping students learn, I almost always see instruction that is procedural-oriented with computation as goal.
