How well you begin school with an organized, consistent, and well managed classroom will determine your success and your students’ success for the rest of the school year. Here are some of the items you’ll want to make sure you use consistently in your classroom to better the chances of your students winning each and every day.
I teach 7th and 8th grade resource room math. I start the year getting to know the students with a student survey and also a name game. It is really important to build relationship with these kiddos right from the first day and also to learn their names quickly. I hit on a few of my most important routines such as how to ask to use the restroom and how I quiet the students. I also make sure to have a seating chart even if you don't know the kids yet. You can always change it once you know them. Let me know if you have any other question :)
I'm looking forward to returning to my classroom, but NOT to being observed again. That's the only thing that bothers me--those observations! Every year, year-after-year. Wish they would stop already!
I do set mine up in a PowerPoint format. I do print out this power point in a notes format so students can follow along and write notes. I do call it my syllabus and use that word with the 8th graders.
First slide room number and school e-mail and my name. Couple slides with my family. Several slides with procedures: 6 basic classroom rules, what to bring to class, restroom/drink procedure, fire drill procedure, tornado drill procedure, first quarter due dates, units covered, grading scale, grading report out schedule (mid term and quarterly)
This should help you a little bit or at least get started.
