Physical Education Teacher Question

I'm currently in school and will receive a degree in physical education, but here's my problem. By the time I finish, I'll be around 41-42 yrs old. I will also have a 20 year Air Force career behind me. Is there a market out there for a 40-something physical education instructor with no teaching experience... just a degree and a military career behind me? It doesn't matter which state... I've been traveling this country for the last 20 years... I'll go anywhere.

I would think an inner city school would snap you up - your military training could be a big plus. Or the charter schools of the inner cities or any charter school that's basing itself on 'back to basics' or structure - again your military training would be a plus. And what about private military schools?? There are some and they would interpret your 20 years in the military as experience whether it's teaching experience or not. There are still correctional schools too.

I don't know if you're open to teaching at other than a mainstream school. Get hold of Peterson's Guide to the Independent Schools and look up the military schools and the private schools that emphasize structure.

41-42 is not old these days - at all. Philadelphia for one example has a 'Teaching Fellows' program - they need people to teach in the inner city and it gives you provisional Pennsylvania certification. Especially check out whether your state has reciprocity with other states in terms of certification.

Will you sub? If you'll sub as a gym teacher, wow, you'll get sub work and from that can come other work. Will you coach sports?

In the meantime, get some experience! Volunteer at a local boys' club. Work at a summer camp - anything will be helpful so you can say you do have experience working with kids even if it's not classroom teaching. And you will have done student teaching, right?

You should watch the film Dangerous Minds about another ex-armed services turned inner city classroom teacher. Good luck but I think there's definitely something out there for you and some school will be lucky to get you.
