Gym Rules & Consequences

In a class I am taking right now, we have to come up with a set of gym rules and consequences. I am curious on everyone's opinions on how the consequences should be set up. Should we give students a time out? or have them take a lap? What is everyone's thoughts on this?

When we're so concerned about childhood obesity, why have children see exercise as a punishment?? Giving them a lap as a consequence sends the message that exercise is a punishment. We should all be running laps - it's not a punishment, it's good for us.

If kids get too rough in a game, I do sit them out but first I point out to them that they are being too rough. Gym class is for teaching how to play games in the right way so I don't expect them to automatically understand what is and is not good or fair play. I'm there to teach them that. But some kids are in better control of themselves than others and sitting a kid out for a time out makes sense to the situation. When the kid is calm and we both think he/she can rejoin the game, I let them back in.

What other issues do you have? I have one rule in my gym - what we do here needs to be safe. We do everything with our safety and our health in mind.

With that I can say to any student, that's not safe or that's not healthy. Again they don't automatically know that and that's why they're in gym class - to learn what's safe and what's healthy.

If a fight breaks out and that's rare, it's an opportunity to teach everybody not to fight. I puzzle things through with them rather than an automatic consequence which doesn't teach kids to reflect on their behavior and how they got in trouble. I want them to learn to control their actions and to learn what positive productive behavior is an in "How else could you have handled this John?"

Any list of rules for a classroom or a gym is usually too long and so meaningless. How do kids remember a different list of rules for each classroom and each teacher? The answer is they don't. Build a strong relationship with your students - have a positive gym environment and they will want to do what you want them to do.
