This is what I am doing. Any other ideas, things you do?

1. 1/2 of classroom homogeneous groups a day.

2. About 15 minutes of AR reading (at least) in class each day. A.R. test taking also. Most students read and take a test on 1-2 books a day.

3. Read alouds nearly every day.

4. At home reading as much as I can get. I education the parents on why and for how long.

5. Dolsch Word List memorized up to 3rd grade.

6. Basal reading-1 story each week, read in class nearly every day. (Every day for low readers and less frequently for high readers).

7. Phonics instruction whenever we can and as needed.

8. Differentiated instruction: Centers 3x a week and 1/2 an hour of reading in groups on the other two days (but no center activities afterward).

What do you do that I don't do? I know I should teach more word families but just haven't had the time!!!!

Yellow Rose Requiring all first graders to be on DRA 20 by the end of the year is not realistic. It surely would be NICE if they'd all be there. But it would be NICE for me if they came to me reading a little bit higher too. (or at least knowing all their sounds and letters)

Grace/IL This thread wandered from "How do we raise reading levels?" to a discussion of the stages of reading expected of first graders so I'll go back to the beginning.

Only one person mentioned spelling lists as a way of increasing reading levels. Yet, teaching systematic sequential spelling can do wonders to raise reading levels because:
