Sue What has helped my students the most is a hundreds chart with the 5's and 10's column lightly shaded grey and 25, 50, 75 and 100 circled. As long as they understand the values of all of the coins, they can use the chart to count money as long as they start with the biggest value coins. scteach Counting money in first grade is a hard task. I totally agree with the post concerning the use of the hundreds chart when teaching money, I think it is a must. Also I use a strategy similar to touch math in first grade. I teach my children to give the coins bunny ears. Some teachers call it giving the coins hair.
