How do you keep the rest of the class busy while you are with a guided reading group?

Right now that seems to be the Daily 5

ETC I do Daily 5 and it works great! There is very little maintenance and planning required. I was very skeptical of it when I first read the book. I only do each center for 15 minutes. 30 minutes is impossible for a normal teacher. The only drawback to Daily 5 is it takes a long time to train the kids how to do it properly

jo/ma Here's what I do in first grade. I have 4 guided reading groups. I see 3 groups a day (M-Tu-W-Th) and the 4th group goes to the Listening Center. Their jobs include must-do tasks each day and then choice activities when finished.

Teach the children to choose good books. Practice independent reading every day so that they can read for 30 minutes without your help. Then they can spend time while you teach by reading, responding to reading in writing...See More
