I'm a new first grade teacher. I typically just do my job, avoid complaining, and work hard :) I recently got a new student, who unexpectedly has severe behavioral issues. I don't have any support in my room, which is fine because until now I didn't need it. I mentioned to the principal today that it's been challenging and we talked about trying to get someone in for a few short periods throughout the day. I know it's best to just grin and bear it, but do you think it was okay for me to mention this? I haven't been able to run guided reading groups or appropriately conference during writer's workshop since he started.
ANON Yes, you should ask for extra help. Where I am, money, teacher and assistant assignments are determined on September 30th. After that date, it's very difficult to get an extra person.
