I have been asked to plan a career day at our Prek-8 school. Has any of your schools done this? How did you get started? I would appreciate any ideas you can provide. Thanks. And have a great school year!!!
Well, got an email (not a phone call ...See MoreYeah, I was the one who asked about the catholic school position. Actually, I started out in parochial schools way back when the earth was cooling...
I was set to dive back into things. Started out that way and wrapping up in the same fashion seemed almost poetic. Think I might have said that.
Well, got an email (not a phone call or a personal explanation) this past thursday, barely hours before my long term sub position was to begin, telling me that a full time, licensed math person had been found and I was no longer needed.
Understand the need to have a fully licensed teacher in the position. Do NOT understand the way the message was conveyed to me. Totally callous and unprofessional, IMHO, particularly since I had already registered, on line ($120) to take the math praxis and spent 50 bucks on notebooks and math materials in anticipation of this assignment.
I had some weak and indecisive administrators when I was in catholic schools before, but none of them would have stooped to this!!!
Assessing students' progress in reading, writing, math, science and social studies doesn't have to depend upon paper, pencil and bubble sheets! Here are 40 unique ways to observe and assess students' understanding of subject matter.
Catholic schools are not that different from any other school. You will still have "problem" students and not all students show up motivated to learn.
I would not do anything different as far as teaching goes. At my school we start each class with prayer and can talk about Christmas and Easter :)
If you are not Catholic, there are a few things to know about mass, but you won't have any problems.
Be prepared to be treated like any other new teacher. The first year where students are testing you is a really tough one, no matter where you are teaching.
Good Luck!

I am looking for ideas on how to have success at recruiting Kdg students for our new school opening in fall of 2015. We have no students from our parish and I have contacted many PreK facilities but can't get a list from them of KDG prospects. Help

If you're connected to a parish, wouldn't church be the place to start? When we started ours we letterbox dropped right throughout the district. Here in Australia we can organise volunteers to do the drop or pay a small fee to have them put as an insert in the local newspaper. See if they are options for you.
Yes, you wouldn't get lists of their students from them, and rightly so.

Our new principal is having us write goals for the year: one Catholic identity and one professional. With the goal we need to include evidence and means if assessment. My goal is to model the importance if Christian living through personal prayer and service to others. I NEED HELP with evidence and assessment. PLEASE
Surely they can't be expecting to monitor your personal prayer. I'd be saying that Vatican II had something to say about that - personal adult responses and so forth. I've had that discussion with our people who demand that we all congregate to say the Angelus if we are in the staffroom at the time, rather than in the classroom and saying it with the kids.
Service would lend itself to some more authentic "evidence". I know this request was months and months ago and hope you got something sorted that fulfilled the requirements of both you and your principal.
