Is it common practice for independent schools to require teachers to proctor a daily study hall without compensation?
In the private schools I am familiar with , yes. Suggest you check with individual schools you are interested in for possible employment.

just wondering Actually, it was just something new that they sprung on us this year a few days before school started. Four of us are now proctoring three hours of study hall a week (about 16 kids at a time) without remuneration. Zodea In our school, teachers who have a class 6 out of 7 periods do not take a study hall. Teachers who only have 5 out of seven periods filled either take a study hall or are a "permanent sub" for that period. In that case it is actually seen as a good thing since that is one less class they have to prep for and grade papers for.
