As a "nurse in the parish" I have been involved in providing health teaching, vision/hearing screening etc. Our school recently expanded from 340 students to nearly 600 and, as most of our students are inner city and "at risk",(we have kids with asthma, seizures, diabetes just for starters) the medical professionals in our church have been lobbying for a school nurse. I need to know if there are parochial schools who have their own School Nurse (i.e not one provided by a hospital program or public health services and not shared with another school). And, if this seeming rare creature exists, what is she paid, is it full or part time....any information would be helpful.
Other Options I would call the central office of the parochial schools in your area to see what the policy of the diosece is with regards to nursing staff in schools. Also, get a clear determination of liability - would the person be covered as any other staff member in the school or is there a different kind of liability insurance the individual should have?
