I'm teaching an online course for an Educational Specialist degree and despite all of my encouragement, announcements, reminders, etc, many students are either not participating or barely participating in the discussions. I have assigned students to post questions and guide discussion each week. Several haven't done the first two weeks assignments and assessments and it's only a two-week course. This is a program where if they get below a C they will be on probation with the program. I don't want to spoon feed them or nag, but I can't believe they are not participating this late in the game. I'm looking for any and all ideas to help motivate my online students.
answer You really can't motivate your students. Online students need to be very self-motivated. All you can do is what you have been doing. You've made course expectations and requirements clear. It is up to your students to meet expectations. When it comes time to grade, you need to hold your students accountable.

So, I asked my online students their thoughts. Over the 11 years I've taught onlin...See More

marjoryt Students may be very sensitive about posting work for a grade, so I'll post very generic prompts. I think they appreciate that, and then we use "assignments" for sensitive work. Most students will tell me horror stories about having their content taken.
