I am currently an intern at a public school for a third grade class. I have been put in charge of running the lessons on persuasive letter writing. I need to make sure that my students are able to write persuasive letters which involves a decent amount of critical thinking. I have been showing them examples of my own letters (which I try to make fun and relevant to them)to help them break down the various steps in writing a persuasive letter. Right now I am trying to help them use a graphic organizer which has them writing their overall opinion, reasons for their opinion and facts to back up their reasons. It is A LOT for them to take in. I also feel as if I am boring them to tears! What can I do to make my lesson informative and fun??
Bev-MI Have the students write about something they are interested in, either positive view or negative view with strong feelings. This makes it personal for them. Sara I'd say first - lose the graphic organizer. I've never seen any class whose eyes don't glaze over when we bring out the graphic organizer. Let's remember that graphic organizers were one adult's idea of what would well with children - and then it spread. Do graphic organizers work for you? Venn diagrams?
