More than read and answer the question

I want my kids to do more than just read and answer the questions. What other kinds of activities so you use to develope comprehension and a love o f reading? I teach a 4/5 grade split.

I aim for general excitement and/or enthusiasm for the reading and I limit my 'right answer' questions to a very few. I go more for - 'what did you like best in this chapter'? What surprised you in this chapter? What do you think will happen next? Who agrees with Bobby's prediction for the next chapter? Who thinks something else?

What do you want to happen? How would you like to see this all come out? What would be the best possible ending?

Which character do you like most? Why? So - we're all agreed - we absolutely don't like the Harry character - we all think he's mean? Does anyone think we're being harsh on Harry?

Does this book remind you of any other books? Let's rate this book - scale of 1 to 10 please. So far from what we've read, what would you give it? Why? And so on. And - who can act like one of the characters in the book - no words - just acting. Let's the rest of us guess who it is - no calling out. Now - who thinks that was Harry that our Bobby was trying to be? Who thinks it was another character?

(the above involves them whole class - 'right answer' questioning rarely does.)

Do you like to read? I'm guessing you do. Can you see value in the book? Fake it if you can't but I think you're a reader. Every book is a discovery - every book's a journey. Every book has a story to tell - let them see your enthusiasm - model enthusiasm and excitement for them. Let them see it's good to be happy about the book and - they can just come to like reading discussion time too.

Where will this book take us to? What will have thought about that we may never have thought about before from reading this book? What did you learn from this book? Anything new? Did you see anything in a new light? (I actually have some flashlights that show different colors and I use them to comically illustrate what it means to 'see things in a new light."

Comprehension of reading is fostered and enhanced by thoughtful questions -not 'right answers' questions. Comprehension of reading is fostered and enhanced by acknowledging that reading is open to interpretation - 'right answer' questions actually limit comprehension rather than foster it.

And they certainly can limit enthusiasm - rollicking good book discussions are the best.
