Marie - your question puts me in mind of the current "Choice Literacy" newsletter article: [link removed].
I don't have any answers for you. What is your focus with the students? I could see working on affixes, which could support the classroom teacher's word walls.

Just an insight: There may be no continuity among classes in your building for this reason. In our district, word walls are for the words each class needs to learn. High frequency and some phonetically regular words are used during the week and put on the Word Wall as anchors for specific phonetic sounds or (HF) words that must be spelled correctly...See More
