How to get children to read more

I need some ideas on how to help children to read more. What have you done to make this happen?

Throw away anthology books, reading logs, simple comprehension questions, incentives/bribes, Reading Counts/Accelerated Reading programs, competition for who can read the most, and forcing children to read above...See More

Alice It doesn't sound like you are a reading teacher but, more like sharing your own personal experience with learning to read. Unfortunately, all children are different and there is no "one size fits all" program. What worked for you may not be another child's cup of tea. Unfortunately, all children are different and there is no "one size fits all" program. What worked for you may not be another child's cup of tea. I absolutely believe that children should be read to for as long as they enjoy it and want it. There is no age limit regarding reading to children (again, this is something that is your own personal preference). I do agree that reading logs are a total waste of time and that bribing kids with prizes doesn't work. The desire to read needs to come from within. I agree with the (reading teacher) poster who said there is no definitive answer to getting kids to read more......I just say give kids books about things they are interested in on a level that is at their comfort level.

My way of getting them to read more would be to start with a real easy book and have them questions to match the book and then keep going harder and harder. I hope this helps1

jas I have had some very reluctant readers over the years but when I tapped into their interests they will read. There was a series written about vampire love. The book was about 3" thick.
