I've been teaching for about 10 years and during that time I've been at two different schools. At both schools, there are a few teachers in our history departments who students will often describe as hard, challenging teachers. Probably a coincidence but in both cases, these teachers weren't necessarily the most approachable, the most willing to talk teaching. I enjoy teaching history and I generally find that students enjoy my class, but I've never been the type of teacher who students say is hard/difficult in the "he really challenges you" type of way. What goes on in these classes? I feel like I challenge students to think critically, but this rarely translates into a low grade if they struggle with this skill. Are you this type of challenging teacher? What tips/advice would you give to someone looking to become more like you?
