I believe both are necessary depending on your learner's learning styles. Some will learn with timelines, dates, and recounting the historical event while others will need the thematic learning to best retain the information. The thematic brings the historical event closer to the learner if done effectively. Making experiences as authentic as possible and concentrating on a handful of experiences the better. Only because of the time factors that teachers have when planning and implementing lessons. Continually tying the learning into the students daily life and asking for reflection helps the student realize how the historical event/movement impacted their life.
