Spanish Teachers Chatboard

LEARNING CENTERS

Good evening. I teach high school Spanish. I am beyond overwhelmed . Our school district has been taken over by the state. Now the state wants to see more student group work and more interaction between the students. What I was thinking was doing learning centers. I teach Spanish 2 and 3 in an inner city school. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I don't know where to start. Thank you in advance.

Julieta Hi Bedolla, I haven't done as much with centers as I would like, although tomorrow I am trying out a few ideas. Tomorrow I'm doing some "testing" to find out what my new to me students know coming in from other teachers. I'm going to have them fill in a Zachary Jones Look book page from earlier this week on clothing.

I plan on having them make a menu with one side of "good" food and one side of bad, or one side what would you like to eat for dinner and not kind of thing. I've been told that one student has a bad peanut allergy and am looking to see if this student knows at least one word for peanut. Not sure on the other students but I like to bring in food so I'm hoping to find out limitations to that question. On the food topic I'd like to try a "tasting" station. I downloaded a mini story about Inka Kola to read and would like them to taste it and fill in a flavor profile.

I have purchased from teachers pay teachers some cards where the students put sentences in order. That was a good station. Each words had its own card.

I have used two hula hoops before as a Venn diagram and had them put cut up index cards in the right section. It worked pretty well for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos. I had words like candle, bat, black cat, skeleton, pan, and witch. You may still be able to get hula hoops at a dollar store if you move quickly. They aren't available all year round in my area.

I have heard of teachers making a station on money from a country and who or what is on it and why they are important. I haven't tried that but like the idea.

Sue Fenton at the madamefifi site has a book called "Entrevista con un Zombi." I'm going to use that tomorrow to see how they do. There are various characters like singer, clown, robot, inventor, movie star, princess, selfie fan, astronaut, DJ, soccer player, mad scientist, grandma, pilot, shopping addict, headhunter (jobs) and tourist. There are 50 options so I can do a few at a time. Most are primarily present tense.
