Spelling Homework

I started teaching during the middle of a school year this past school year. The substitute teacher who was there before me gave spelling homework each night. The homework would consists of putting the words into abc order, putting them into sentences, homophones, etc. They took a spelling test on the words every Friday and if they got some wrong, they would write the words 5 times each. I recently took a class and the instructor mentioned spelling test and writing the words 5 times each. She said this was an "archaeic" way of teaching. While I do think kids need to know how to spell, I'm trying to think of a more interesting way of giving them spelling homework. The instructor said that kids are never too old for word sorts if they are still on a beginner's level. This is for a 5th grade class. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.
