End Of The Year Gift

I need help with an end of the year gift for my student teacher. His last day is Friday. Unfortunately, my students will be happy to see him go and I will too. Jobs are scarce and chances are he won't get one, so I don't think I should purchase teacher supplies b/c they might be a waste- in addition to the fact that he has said he doesn't really want to teach. Should I get a gift card, a book and have the students sign it, and maybe cupcakes for his last day? Or should I give him cash b/c he has mentioned a couple of times that he is broke? Help!!

Ms.Diaz I think your idea is fine. I would not give him money. Personally, I'd take offense to that even if I was broke. If anything, a gift certificate to one of his favorite places would do.

I am only 34 so it's not like I don't remember being in college and being overwhelmed, but he was ridiculous- he did next to nothing. My class didn't like him b/c he wasn't consistent. They are very high performing students (5th grade) and over half of the class attends the talented and gifted class one day a week. They are self-motivated, very focused and competitive. But, they can be talkative so I have to channel this into assignments where they can talk. But, he would always punish them for talking. However, he was inconsistent- so one student might have silent lunch for talking, another would get a phone call, etc. Then, he would tell them if they could listen for the rest of the class, he would take away their punishments but he never would. I could go on and on and on. This assignment should have been a breeze.

The first day I met him he told me he didn't really want to teach and was thinking of continuing on in graduate school to do something else. And, he has reiterated that sentiment throughout the semester. Until, recently when he started mentioning that he is broke and needs to get a job. And stated he was hoping he could get a teaching job. Thankfully, my district has a hiring freeze b/c in good conscience I could not recommend him. Can't wait until Friday so I can see the back of him.

Leah I'm sorry you and your class had to put up with him. I'd make him a best wishes card and have the children sign it.

Do not recommend him ever.

East End Long Islander Goodness -- just have a party. If he was THAT disliked by you and your students, and is incompetent, why do more than a going-away party with a card and cake and beverages?
