What I'm looking for is a 5th grade vocabulary list that focuses on vocabulary applicable for 2nd generation Hispanics. Any suggestions?
I'm just wondering if there's an evidenced-based research that was ever done to underlie the practice regardless of the number of words - has any research ever been done to demonstrate that memorizing definitions of words impacts on vocabulary? Can the brain retain memorized definitions for any length of time? Does a memorized definition really result in an understanding of the word that translates into semantic meaning when the word is encountered in reading?
The practice is such an old one that I have to doubt that any research preceded it but has any been done since? It's rather like telling people to starve a cold and feed a fever or whatever the old wives' tale was but research shows neither is effective treatment for a cold or a fever. Has research shown the traditional vocabulary test to be effective in any way?
